A venue for national education
about human rights and world peace
National Memorial Museum
of Forced Mobilization
under Japanese Occupation

The National Memorial Museum of Forced Mobilization under Japanese Occupation was established with the purpose to provide a venue for national education regarding human rights and world peace as well as to encourage people to have a mature historical awareness by investigating the real facts of the forced mobilization under Japanese occupation. Considering that Busan Harbor was the starting place of forced mobilization during Japanese occupation and 22% of the victims of forced mobilization came from the Gyeongsang provinces, which has significance in terms of history and accessibility, etc., it was decided to establish the museum in Busan in September 2008.

The museum was built by October 2014 on a 76,465 square meter (㎡) site and is a three-floor building with a four-floor basement. The building scale for total area is 12,062 square meter (㎡), and cost 50.6 Billion KRW. The History Hall inside has a collection of essays, photos, goods, etc. from overseas from those days.

We will use the history hall as “a place for history education regarding forced mobilization under Japanese occupation” and an “eco-friendly resting place for the local residents” as well as “a memorial facility aiming to honor the bereaved.”
